About Us

My name is Jayne Warren and I live in Portsmouth with my husband Steve, and all our gorgeous rats.

We started keeping rats some years back, and began with two beautiful does in 2000 – these were followed by a series of adult does, all from the RSPCA. After 5 years of girls, we decided to keep boys – what a difference!

Now, however, things are changing again as I intend to start breeding, primarily for Russian Topaz but also for related varieties. I'm am attempting this venture with the help of several good friends who are kindly offering lots of good sound advice, support, time and patience for which I am most grateful.

My rats are first and foremost pets, secondly show animals. We do not practice culling and it is something that would never be considered.

I am a member of the NFRS and LSCMRC, and regularly show my rats. I am show secretary for Romsey and for the Portsmouth shows and secretary for the NFRS.

All cages are cleaned once a week, and spot cleaned on a daily basis – the rats are kept on Ecopetbed & Bedmax bedding and all are on the Shunamite diet, with extra treats of curly kale, broccoli and lots of other healthy goodies.

We have an assortment of cages, since the colony consists of rats of varying ages; these are distributed between the dining room and the rat room (upstairs). We also keep spares handy for fostering or when rats come to stay for short holidays.

The various groups come out on a staggered timetable for free-ranging, which is always good fun – we now use nice big plywood boards to protect such things as computer cables, scanner, internet, and telephone leads – doesn’t always look attractive, but is a lot cheaper in the long run!
